TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) is a minimally invasive procedure that replaces a narrowed aortic valve without open-heart surgery. A new valve is delivered through a catheter, usually via an artery in the leg, and expanded into place inside the diseased valve. TAVI offers a safer alternative to traditional valve surgery for many patients, especially those at higher surgical risk, with faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.
TAVI is typically recommended for patients with severe aortic valve stenosis who are at intermediate to high risk for open-heart surgery, or who prefer a less invasive option. Your cardiac team will evaluate valve severity, overall health, and surgical risk through echocardiography and imaging before recommending TAVI.
