What is blood cancer?
Blood cancers (leukaemias, lymphomas, and related disorders) arise in blood-forming or lymphatic cells. Plans may include chemotherapy, targeted drugs, immunotherapy, radiation, and in selected cases stem-cell transplant pathways.
Causes
Causes differ by subtype. Prior chemotherapy or radiation, certain infections, immune disorders, and inherited predispositions can contribute. Many patients have no clear single cause.
Risk factors
Risk factors vary: age, prior cancer treatment, chemical exposures (such as benzene), family history for some types, and conditions that weaken the immune system.
Importance of early diagnosis
Earlier recognition of abnormal blood counts, persistent infections, or unexplained lymph nodes allows faster subtype diagnosis and risk-adapted therapy - which strongly affects outcomes.
